Challenge Gdansk 2023

On the 18th June, I did my 5th race of the season. I flew to Poland the Friday before the race, with an easy travel day it was quickly race day.

The field was strong with some girls within the top 50 of the PTO. I was looking forward to racing the 1900m sea swim, 56-mile flat fast bike course and then finishing with a 13.1 mile mixed terrain run course.

The start was fast with a 20m run in the shallow sea. I had one athlete trying to swim over me but soon got rid of her and was able to hold fellow Brits feet Rosie Western. We exited the water after 26mins with a good lead on the rest of the field. With a good transition, I was out on the bike in first.

The bike was flat and fast and after some below average runs off the bike, in the past couple of races, I decided to stick to my power numbers and see if this could change my run. I kept the lead for 2 laps of the 3 lap course before getting overtaken by 2 women, who were able to gap me.

Coming onto the run I felt good, focusing on form. Unfortunately, I wasn’t running quick enough to keep 3rd and ended up getting overtaken at around 9km, by 2 girls running fast, putting myself into 5th, which I held till the end.

Overall a solid performance with a great field. Looking forward to working on what we have learnt from this race and improving my back end running off the bike. It’s not a quick fix, but with consistency and work, we keep going learning, racing and having fun.

Next up Swansea 70.3 in 4 weeks.
